Verbal reasoning tests measure your ability to understand, analyse, and draw conclusions from written information. They assess vocabulary, reading comprehension, logical inference, and ability to identify relationships between words and ideas. They are commonly used in graduate job assessments, university entrance tests, and professional selection processes.
A synonym is a word with the same or very similar meaning as another word (e.g., happy/joyful, big/large). An antonym is a word with the opposite meaning (e.g., happy/sad, begin/end). Verbal reasoning tests frequently ask you to identify synonyms or antonyms for less common vocabulary words.
A word analogy identifies the relationship between a pair of words and applies the same relationship to a different pair. Example: 'Physician is to Hospital as Judge is to ___' (Courtroom). The key is to identify the exact relationship type first — professional to workplace, part to whole, tool to user, degree of intensity — before looking at the options.
Key strategies include: only using information from the passage (not background knowledge), eliminating extreme options with 'always', 'never', 'all', or 'none', distinguishing between 'must be true' and 'could be true', identifying the main idea in the first or last sentence of each paragraph, and reading the questions before the passage to know what to look for.
Context clues help identify the missing word in a sentence. Contrast clues use words like 'despite', 'although', 'however' to signal the missing word contrasts with the surrounding context. Support clues use 'because', 'therefore', 'as a result' to signal alignment. Definition clues describe the missing word directly within the sentence.
Learning word roots is more efficient than memorising individual words. Key roots: bene- (good: benevolent, beneficial), mal- (bad: malicious, malevolent), -logy (study of: ornithology, psychology), -vert (turn: introvert, divert), trans- (across: transparent, transient), mis- (wrong/hate: misanthrope, misogynist).
Ephemeral means lasting for a very short time; short-lived and transitory. Its antonyms include enduring, permanent, and lasting. It comes from the Greek 'ephemeros' meaning 'lasting a day'. It commonly appears in vocabulary tests alongside similar words like transient (passing), fleeting, and momentary.
Ubiquitous means present, appearing, or found everywhere. Something ubiquitous is seemingly everywhere at once. Its antonyms include rare, scarce, and uncommon. Example: 'Smartphones have become ubiquitous in modern life.' It is frequently tested in verbal reasoning vocabulary sections.
