150 practice questions and 100 flashcards covering numerical reasoning: number sequences, percentages, ratios, data interpretation, and quantitative problem-solving.
Numerical reasoning tests are used by South African banks, consulting firms, graduate employers, and professional certification bodies to assess your ability to work accurately with numbers under time pressure. This is not a mathematics test ā it is a test of data interpretation and quantitative reasoning using real-world data sets. This practice set covers all main numerical reasoning question types: data interpretation from tables and graphs, percentage calculations, ratio and proportion, number series completion, currency and unit conversion, and rate and speed problems.
Time pressure is the defining feature of numerical reasoning tests. Most South African corporate assessments allow 45 to 75 seconds per question. Working under real time constraints from the start of your preparation is essential ā practising with no time limit and then sitting a timed test does not transfer the skill. Always time yourself strictly. If a question takes more than 90 seconds, mark it and move on ā returning to difficult questions is faster than losing several subsequent questions to time pressure.
The most common errors in numerical reasoning are not arithmetic errors (calculators eliminate most of these) but setup errors: using the wrong column from a table, misreading the scale on a graph, confusing percentage change with percentage point change, or solving for the wrong variable. Develop the habit of reading the question twice ā once before looking at the data, and once after calculating ā to confirm you have answered what was actually asked.
Numerical Reasoning. Assesses your ability to work with numbers, data, and quantitative information. Covers number sequences and patterns, percentages and ratios, data interpretation from tables and graphs, proportional reasoning, basic statistics, and everyday quantitative problem-solving. Essential for university entrance, aptitude tests, and professional selection.

A number sequence is an ordered list of numbers following a defined pattern or rule. Common types include: arithmetic sequences (constant difference), geometric sequences (constant ratio), square numbers (1,4,9,16,25), cube numbers (1,8,27,64), Fibonacci sequences (each term = sum of two before), and sequences with increasing differences.
Percentage increase = (New Value ā Old Value) Ć· Old Value Ć 100. Example: if a price goes from R200 to R250, the increase is R50. Percentage increase = 50 Ć· 200 Ć 100 = 25%. To find the original value before a percentage increase, divide the new value by (1 + decimal rate). R250 Ć· 1.25 = R200.
First check all column and row headers carefully ā note the units (thousands, millions, percentages). Then identify what the question asks (total, percentage, ratio, change). Eliminate clearly wrong options before calculating. Common traps include misreading units and answering the wrong column.
Mean is the arithmetic average (sum Ć· count). It is affected by outliers. Median is the middle value when data is ordered ā not affected by outliers. Mode is the most frequently occurring value. For skewed distributions, the median is more representative than the mean. A dataset can have no mode, one mode, or multiple modes.
The interquartile range (IQR) = Q3 ā Q1. It measures the spread of the middle 50% of data. Q1 is the median of the lower half of the data; Q3 is the median of the upper half. The IQR is not affected by outliers, making it a more robust measure of spread than the full range (Max ā Min).
To share an amount in a ratio: (1) Add all parts of the ratio. (2) Divide the total amount by the sum of parts to find the value of one part. (3) Multiply each ratio number by the value of one part. Example: share R450 in ratio 2:3. Total parts = 5. One part = R450Ć·5 = R90. Shares: 2ĆR90 = R180 and 3ĆR90 = R270.
Simple interest = Principal Ć Rate Ć Time. Applied to the original principal each period. Compound interest = P(1 + r)^t ā P. Applied to the growing balance, so interest earns interest. Over time, compound interest grows significantly faster than simple interest. The Rule of 72 estimates when compound growth doubles: 72 Ć· annual rate = years to double.
Probability = number of favourable outcomes Ć· total number of possible outcomes. Values range from 0 (impossible) to 1 (certain). The complement rule: P(not A) = 1 ā P(A). For independent events: P(A and B) = P(A) Ć P(B). For mutually exclusive events: P(A or B) = P(A) + P(B).
