Mathematical Literacy is the NSC subject where we see the most candidates underperform relative to their ability. In our experience reviewing past papers and mark schemes, the issue is almost never that students cannot do the mathematics โ it is that they do not read the context carefully enough before attempting the calculation. Every Mathematical Literacy question is embedded in a real-world scenario. The context tells you what to calculate and how to interpret your answer. Students who skip the context and jump to numbers consistently lose marks that their mathematical ability should have earned them.
What Mathematical Literacy actually tests
Mathematical Literacy is not a simplified version of Mathematics. It is a different subject that tests the ability to use mathematical reasoning in real-life contexts โ budgets, floor plans, timetables, statistics, maps, and financial documents. The four content areas in the CAPS curriculum are: Number and calculations with numbers (percentages, ratios, rates, proportion), Patterns, relationships and representations (graphs, tables, formulae), Space, shape and measurement (perimeter, area, volume, scale, time), and Data handling (statistics, probability, interpreting data).
The exam has two papers. Paper 1 is a basic skills paper testing fundamental mathematical operations in context. Paper 2 is an application paper with more complex multi-step problems. Both papers require you to work with a given scenario โ a floor plan, a payslip, a distance table, a graph of temperature data โ and answer questions about it. You cannot answer from general knowledge; you must work with the specific numbers provided.
Finance: the highest-yield section
Financial mathematics carries the most marks in Mathematical Literacy and includes: income and expenditure (reading payslips, calculating net pay from gross pay after deductions, working with budgets), percentage calculations (VAT at 15%, percentage increase and decrease, discount), interest (simple interest: I = P ร r ร t; compound interest: A = P(1 + r)^n), hire purchase and loans (total cost over a period, monthly repayments), and exchange rates (converting between rands and foreign currency).
For VAT calculations: to find VAT-inclusive price, multiply by 1.15. To find VAT amount from an inclusive price, multiply by 15/115 (or divide by 1.15 and subtract). Percentage change formula: (new value minus original value) divided by original value, times 100. Simple interest: I = P ร r ร t where r is expressed as a decimal (8% = 0.08) and t is in years. These formulas are provided on the formula sheet โ but you must know when to apply each one.
Maps, plans and measurement
Scale questions appear in almost every Mathematical Literacy exam. A scale of 1:100 means 1 unit on the plan represents 100 units in reality. To convert from plan measurement to actual measurement, multiply by the scale ratio. To convert from actual to plan, divide. Always check whether the scale is given as a ratio (1:100), a bar scale (a drawn line labelled with a real distance), or a fraction (1/100) โ all three forms appear in NSC papers.
Floor plans test your ability to identify rooms, calculate floor area (length ร width for rectangular rooms), calculate perimeter (total length of all walls), and work with given furniture dimensions to check if items fit in a space. Time and timetable questions ask you to calculate durations, convert between 12-hour and 24-hour formats, and work with time zones. South Africa is in the UTC+2 time zone (SAST โ South Africa Standard Time).
Data handling: reading graphs and statistics
Data handling questions provide a data set, table, or graph and ask you to: calculate measures of central tendency (mean, median, mode), calculate the range (maximum minus minimum), identify the modal class (most frequent value group), read values from bar charts and line graphs, interpret trends, and work with basic probability (probability = number of favourable outcomes divided by total possible outcomes).
For any graph or table question: read the title, the axis labels, and the scale before attempting to answer. The most common error is reading the scale incorrectly โ a y-axis that goes from 0 to 100 in steps of 20 is different from one that goes from 0 to 1000 in steps of 200. Always check what one grid line or bar represents in actual value before reading off numbers.
Exam technique: how to use your calculator and formula sheet
Mathematical Literacy allows a calculator in both papers. This means the premium is on reading and setting up the correct calculation โ not on arithmetic. Spend your time understanding what the question asks, identifying the correct formula or operation, substituting the correct values, and checking that your answer makes sense in context. A monthly electricity bill of R145,000 should immediately raise a flag โ errors in units (confused rands with cents, or months with years) are the most common source of wrong answers.
The formula sheet is provided in the exam and contains the most frequently used formulas including simple and compound interest, area and perimeter formulas, and conversion factors. You do not need to memorise these, but you must know which formula applies to which situation and what each variable represents.
