Matric Mathematics has one of the highest failure rates in the NSC - but also one of the highest pass rates among students who study systematically. The difference is almost always preparation strategy, not ability.
Understanding the NSC Mathematics Exam
The NSC Mathematics exam consists of two papers, each 3 hours and worth 150 marks:
- Paper 1 - Algebra, Functions, Calculus, Finance, Sequences and Series, Probability
- Paper 2 - Trigonometry, Analytical Geometry, Euclidean Geometry, Statistics
Topic Weight by Paper
Paper 1 (150 marks)
- Functions and graphs: ~35 marks
- Calculus: ~35 marks
- Algebra, equations and inequalities: ~25 marks
- Finance, growth and decay: ~15 marks
- Sequences and series: ~25 marks
- Probability: ~15 marks
Paper 2 (150 marks)
- Trigonometry: ~50 marks
- Euclidean geometry: ~40 marks
- Analytical geometry: ~30 marks
- Statistics: ~20 marks
- Data handling: ~10 marks
The 10 Most Common Mistakes
- Not showing working. Method marks are awarded even when the final answer is wrong. Always show every step.
- Forgetting both roots of a quadratic. x^2 = 4 gives x = +/-2, not just x = 2.
- Calculator mode error. Check degrees vs radians before every trigonometry calculation.
- Not factorising fully before differentiating. Simplify expressions before applying the power rule.
- Skipping diagrams. Drawing a diagram earns marks and reveals the approach.
- Poor time management. Students spend too long on difficult Section B questions.
- Leaving questions blank. Even a partial attempt earns method marks.
- Log law errors. Review log rules carefully - common exam trap.
- Substitution errors. Substitute carefully, especially negative values.
- Not checking reasonableness. If your answer is x = -10 for a length, something is wrong.

Where to Find Past Papers
Official NSC past papers are available free on the Department of Basic Education website. Always start with the most recent papers as they reflect the current exam style.
The topics that carry the most marks
Matric Mathematics Paper 1 is dominated by three topic areas: Algebra and Equations (approximately 35 marks), Functions and Graphs (approximately 35 marks), and Calculus/Differential Calculus (approximately 35 marks). Together these three areas account for roughly 75% of Paper 1. If you are short on time, prioritise these. Financial Mathematics (approximately 15 marks) is also high-yield because the question types repeat year after year.
Paper 2 covers Analytical Geometry (approximately 40 marks), Statistics (approximately 20 marks), Trigonometry (approximately 50 marks), and Euclidean Geometry (approximately 40 marks). Most students find Euclidean Geometry the hardest โ but it is also the most predictable. The same proof types appear year after year. Learning five or six standard proofs gives you access to almost all the marks.
Common mistakes that cost marks
Not showing working is the single biggest mark-killer in Mathematics. In SA matric, method marks are awarded even if your final answer is wrong. Write every step, even if it seems obvious. Examiners cannot give method marks for working they cannot see.
Rounding too early is a close second. Keep answers in exact or surd form until the final step, then round to the required decimal places. Premature rounding causes errors that compound through multi-step problems.
Reading the question incorrectly is the third most common error. Underline what the question is actually asking. Is it asking for the x-coordinate or the y-coordinate? The gradient or the equation? The value of x or the value of f(x)? Spend ten seconds re-reading before you start writing.
Using past papers correctly
Most students use past papers as tests. They do the paper, check the mark scheme, note their score, and move on. Tour is the wrong approach. Use each past paper question as a learning tool. When you get a question wrong, do not just read the correct answer โ rework the entire solution from scratch, following the mark scheme step by step. Then close the book and try to reproduce it from memory. Only then move to the next question.
Dragonfly's Mathematics practice questions are designed to cover the most frequently tested concepts across all three Papers from 2019 to 2024. The explanations are written to show the method, not just the answer.
