PMBOK 7 and Agile in 2026

The PMP is the world's most recognised project management certification. Since 2021, the exam shifted dramatically — it now covers agile and hybrid approaches equally alongside traditional predictive (waterfall) methods. What the Current PMP Exam Covers

The PMP Exam Content Outline (ECO) has three domains:

• People (42%): Leading teams, managing conflicts, supporting team performance, collaborating with stakeholders, empowering the team, motivating and influencing
• Process (50%): Executing with urgency, managing communications, assessing risk, iterative delivery, planning and managing scope/schedule/budget/quality/resources/procurements
• Business Environment (8%): Benefits realisation, compliance, organisational change, strategic alignment

PMBOK 7th Edition — What Changed

PMBOK 7 replaced the 5 process groups and 10 knowledge areas with 12 principles and 8 performance domains. Stop trying to memorise processes — understand the principles instead.

• 12 Principles: Stewardship, Team, Stakeholders, Value, Systems Thinking, Leadership, Tailoring, Quality, Complexity, Risk, Adaptability, Change
• 8 Performance Domains: Stakeholders, Team, Development Approach/Lifecycle, Planning, Project Work, Delivery, Measurement, Uncertainty

Agile and Scrum — What You Must Know

Half the exam is agile. You do not need to be a certified Scrum Master, but you must understand these fundamentals:

• Scrum accountabilities: Product Owner (maximises value, owns backlog), Scrum Master (serves team, removes impediments), Developers (create the increment)
• Scrum events: Sprint (1–4 weeks), Sprint Planning, Daily Scrum (15 min), Sprint Review (with stakeholders), Sprint Retrospective (team improvement)
• Scrum artifacts: Product Backlog (ordered list, owned by PO), Sprint Backlog (tour sprint's plan, owned by Developers), Increment (Done product)
• Definition of Done: The quality standard every increment must meet before it can be considered releasable
• MVP: Minimum Viable Product — deliver smallest thing that provides learning/value

The PMP Scenario Question Strategy

Most PMP questions follow tour pattern: "You are managing a project. Something happens. What do you do FIRST?" The trick is knowing which response represents the most senior, proactive, process-aligned thinking.

General decision hierarchy for scenario questions:

1. First, assess/investigate the situation (don't react blindly)
2. Then, communicate with stakeholders (don't hide problems)
3. Then, update the project management plan (document everything)
4. Only then, escalate if you can't resolve it within your authority

Prerequisites and Exam Format

• Experience required: 36 months leading projects (if you have a 4-year degree) or 60 months (no degree)
• Education required: 35 hours of PM education (training, courses — online courses count)
• Exam format: 180 questions, 230 minutes, 3 optional 10-minute breaks. Mix of multiple choice, drag-and-drop, matching, hotspot
• Passing: PMI does not publish a pass mark — they use psychometric scoring
• Renewal: 60 PDUs every 3 years (easy to get through webinars, reading, volunteering)

The exam content outline and domain weightings

The PMP exam since 2021 uses the Examination Content Outline (ECO) which is divided into three domains: People (42%), Process (50%), and Business Environment (8%). People covers leadership, team management, conflict resolution, and stakeholder engagement. Process covers project management methods — both predictive (waterfall) and agile approaches. Business Environment covers strategic alignment, compliance, and change management. The current exam is explicitly hybrid: you need to understand both traditional project management and agile frameworks.

Agile is not optional

The single biggest change in the 2021 PMP ECO revision was the requirement to understand agile and hybrid approaches. Approximately 50% of exam questions have an agile or hybrid context. You need to understand Scrum (roles: Product Owner, Scrum Master, Development Team; events: Sprint Planning, Daily Scrum, Sprint Review, Retrospective; artefacts: Product Backlog, Sprint Backlog, Increment), Kanban (WIP limits, flow, pull system), and the principles behind the Agile Manifesto.

The PMBOK Guide 7th Edition shifted from process groups to principles and performance domains, which better reflects the hybrid reality of modern project management. If you studied for the PMP using PMBOK 6th Edition materials only, you will encounter questions where predictive process-group thinking leads to wrong answers.

The 35 contact hours requirement

To apply for the PMP, you need 35 contact hours of project management education. These can be completed through accredited PMI Registered Education Providers, online course providers (Udemy, Coursera, LinkedIn Learning), or in-house corporate training. The hours must be documented — keep certificates of completion. Project management work experience (36 months with a four-year degree, or 60 months with a high school diploma) must also be verified by your employer.
