Most students study by re-reading notes and highlighting textbooks. Research consistently shows that these feel productive but produce very poor long-term retention. Here are the techniques that cognitive science has proven to actually work.
Active Recall: The Most Powerful Technique
Active recall means testing yourself on material rather than reading it again. When you struggle to retrieve information, your brain strengthens that memory pathway. When you re-read, you get a feeling of familiarity that does not equal actual learning.
- After reading a section, close the book and write down everything you can remember
- Use flashcards and cover the answer before attempting to recall

Spaced Repetition
Spaced repetition means reviewing material at increasing intervals. The optimal review schedule fights the forgetting curve - the brain's tendency to lose roughly 70% of new information within 24 hours without reinforcement.
- Review new material after 1 day, then 3 days, then 7 days, then 21 days

The Feynman Technique
Named after physicist Richard Feynman. The idea: if you cannot explain a concept simply, you do not understand it well enough. The technique:
- Choose a concept
- Explain it in simple language as if teaching a 12-year-old
- Identify where your explanation breaks down or becomes uncertain
- Return to your source material and fill the gap
- Simplify and use analogies to consolidate
Interleaving
Interleaving means mixing different topics or problem types in a single study session, rather than studying one topic at a time (blocked practice). It feels harder and slower but produces significantly better long-term retention and transfer of knowledge.
Instead of studying 3 chapters of maths functions in a row, alternate: functions, then calculus, then trigonometry. Your brain is forced to retrieve and discriminate between approaches each time.
Environment and Timing
- Same time, same place: Attaching study to a consistent trigger dramatically increases consistency
- No phone: Every notification costs approximately 23 minutes of focused attention to recover from
- Pomodoro technique: 25 minutes of deep focus, 5 minutes break. Four rounds, then a 30-minute break
- Sleep: Memory consolidation happens during sleep. Do not sacrifice sleep for extra hours of study
What NOT to Do

A note from our team

Why most study advice fails South African students
A lot of study technique research comes from North American or European university settings with structured semesters, tutors, and small class sizes. South African matric students often study in far more difficult conditions: shared rooms, load shedding, no access to tutors, and enormous pressure. The good news is that the most effective techniques โ active recall and spaced repetition โ require almost nothing except a few focused minutes per day. You don't need quiet or WiFi. You need paper, or a phone, and the discipline to test yourself rather than re-read.
If you are studying for matric, prioritise doing past papers from the very first week of your revision. Do not wait until you feel ready. Doing questions you can't yet answer is more valuable than reading content you mostly know. The struggle is the mechanism.
