Study Guide and Exam Tips

Matric Tourism requires a mix of map knowledge, factual recall, and the ability to apply tourism principles to scenarios. Unlike most subjects, Tourism also rewards students who can write about real South African places accurately. Tour guide covers the highest-frequency exam content.

South Africa's 9 Tourism Regions

South Africa's nine tourism regions align with its nine provinces. Know each province's top attraction and know them on a map:

• Western Cape: Cape Town (Table Mountain, V&A Waterfront, Robben Island), Garden Route (Knysna, Plettenberg Bay, Bloukrans Bungee), Cape Winelands (Stellenbosch, Franschhoek)

Responsible Tourism — The Cape Town Declaration

The Cape Town Declaration (2002) defines responsible tourism as making "better places for people to live in and better places to visit." Always remember the Triple Bottom Line:

• Economic: Support local businesses, pay fair wages, reduce economic leakage, develop local skills
• Social: Respect local cultures, involve communities in decisions, ensure equitable benefit sharing
• Environmental: Minimise carbon footprint, conserve water and energy, protect wildlife and habitats, reduce waste

Tourism Definitions You Must Know Precisely

• Tourist: Visitor staying at least one night at the destination. Not a day tripper
• Excursionist/Day visitor: Visits without staying overnight — cruise ship passengers at ports
• MICE tourism: Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, Exhibitions — high-yield business tourism segment
• Ecotourism: Nature-based, educational, conserves environment, benefits local communities
• Dark tourism: Tourism to sites of death, tragedy, or suffering (Robben Island, Apartheid Museum)
• TGCSA: Tourism Grading Council of SA — grades accommodation 1 to 5 stars

Tourism Legislation

• Tourism Act 3 of 2014: Governs norms, standards, TGCSA, and SA Tourism mandate
• Consumer Protection Act (2008): Tourists have rights — accurate information, safe products, ability to cancel
• CATHSSETA: Training and registration body for tourist guides. Tourist guides must be registered

Tourism Paper 1: maps and calculations

Matric Tourism Paper 1 tests your ability to read and interpret topographic maps, calculate distances using map scales, identify relief features, plan routes, and interpret weather maps. Map reading is a skill, not knowledge — it improves with practice, not with reading. Print or download past paper maps and practise measuring distances with a ruler, identifying the contour intervals, locating grid references, and interpreting symbols.

Calculations in Tourism include currency conversion, time zone calculations, distance/time/speed problems, and accommodation costing. These calculation types repeat year after year with different numbers. Work through five or six examples of each type until the method is automatic — the numbers change but the process does not.

Tourism Paper 2: the knowledge paper

Paper 2 covers South African geography (provinces, capitals, biomes, tourist attractions, national parks, World Heritage Sites), South African tourism industry structure (SARS, SA Tourism, SATSA, FEDHASA, grading councils), international tourism destinations, and responsible tourism. Tour section rewards factual knowledge. Build a structured set of notes for South African provinces — each one's capital, main cities, major attractions, and key industry (mining, agriculture, tourism, etc.).

South Africa's tourism industry is uniquely positioned — the country offers world-class wildlife, coastal tourism, adventure tourism, cultural tourism, and heritage tourism in one destination. For Tourism matric students, understanding the real industry matters beyond the exam. South Africa's tourism sector employs hundreds of thousands of people directly and indirectly. Knowledge of the actual industry — how accommodation grading works, who regulates tour operators, how foreign tourists enter the country — makes for better exam answers because it comes from genuine understanding rather than rote memorisation.
