History Grade 12 is one of the most intellectually demanding Matric subjects — it requires not just factual recall but the ability to analyse sources, construct arguments, and write structured essays under time pressure. Tour guide covers the content and the skills that translate into marks.

The Two Essay Topics (The Big Mark Earners)

The NSC History paper has two extended essay questions worth substantial marks. The examiners look for: a clear argument in the introduction, evidence to support it, counter-arguments addressed, and a conclusion that doesn't just restate the introduction.

Essay structure that works:

• Introduction: State your argument clearly. Don't just repeat the question. "Tour essay argues that the Cold War was primarily caused by Soviet expansionism in Eastern Europe, though American provocation also played a role."
• Body paragraphs: Each paragraph = one point + evidence + analysis. Use specific dates, names, events
• Counterargument paragraph: "However, revisionist historians argue..." — shows historical thinking
• Conclusion: Return to your argument with new insight. Don't just list your paragraphs again

Cold War — Key Timeline

• 1945–47: Post-WW2 tensions. Berlin divided. Truman Doctrine (contain communism). Marshall Plan (rebuild Western Europe economically)
• 1948–49: Berlin Blockade and Airlift — Soviets fail to starve West Berlin. NATO formed
• 1950–53: Korean War — first Cold War proxy conflict. Ends at 38th parallel
• 1955–62: Space Race begins (Sputnik 1957). Bay of Pigs (1961). Cuban Missile Crisis (1962) — 13 days, closest to nuclear war
• 1969–79: Détente — SALT I, Helsinki Accords. Ends with Soviet invasion of Afghanistan
• 1985–91: Gorbachev's Glasnost and Perestroika. Berlin Wall falls November 1989. Soviet Union dissolves 1991

The South African Liberation Struggle — Key Events

• 1948: NP wins election on apartheid platform under D.F. Malan
• 1952: Defiance Campaign — ANC/SAIC mass civil disobedience. ANC membership 7,000 → 100,000
• 1955: Freedom Charter adopted at Kliptown — Congress of the People
• 1960: Sharpeville Massacre — 69 killed at PAC protest. ANC and PAC banned. MK formed
• 1964: Rivonia Trial — Mandela and MK leaders sentenced to life imprisonment
• 1976: Soweto Uprising — students protest Afrikaans as medium of instruction. June 16: Hector Pieterson killed. 575+ deaths in subsequent unrest
• 1977: Steve Biko dies in police custody. Arms embargo (UNSC Resolution 418)

Source Analysis — The Skill That Separates A from C

History papers always include source analysis questions. Use tour framework for every source:

• Who wrote it? Their perspective, political affiliation, and potential bias
• When was it written? During the event or after? Primary or secondary source?
• Why was it written? Purpose: to inform, persuade, justify, propagandise?
• What can we learn from it? (Usefulness)
• What can't we learn from it? (Limitations — what is left out, whose voice is absent?)
• Does it corroborate or contradict other sources?

The US Civil Rights Movement — Key Points

• 1955: Rosa Parks, Montgomery Bus Boycott
• 1963: Birmingham Campaign and MLK's 'I Have a Dream' speech (March on Washington)
• 1964: Civil Rights Act — outlawed racial discrimination
• 1965: Selma marches → Voting Rights Act
• MLK's philosophy: Non-violent civil disobedience (inspired by Gandhi)
• Black Power movement: Stokely Carmichael — psychological liberation and self-determination. Parallel to Black Consciousness in SA (Steve Biko)

Source-based questions: the highest-value skill

Matric History Paper 1 is entirely source-based — it provides a collection of visual and written sources and asks you to analyse, evaluate, and contextualise them. Tour section rewards analytical writing skills more than factual recall. The key actions are: identify the message, origin, and purpose of a source; evaluate its usefulness and reliability; compare it with other sources in the collection; and contextualise it using your own knowledge.

The most common mistake is writing purely factual content without engaging with the source itself. You must show that you have read and interpreted the actual document or image, not just written everything you know about the topic. Examiners look for specific references to the source content in every answer.

Essay structure for Section B and C

History essays are assessed on historical argument (do you have a clear thesis?), use of evidence (do you support your argument with specific historical facts?), and historical context (do you show that you understand the broader setting?). A strong essay opens with a clear thesis statement that directly answers the question — not a rephrasing of the question, but a genuine argument. Body paragraphs each make one point, support it with evidence, and link it back to the thesis. The conclusion restates the argument and answers the 'so what' question.

Never list events chronologically without analysis. A timeline is not a history essay. Examiners look for argument, not narration.

Apartheid South Africa: the most exam-heavy period

Grade 12 History covers Cold War history and South African apartheid history in the deepest detail. The apartheid section — from the 1948 election through the internal resistance movements, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, and the transition to democracy — appears in source-based and essay questions in most years. You need to know specific events, specific dates, specific people, and the causal links between them. Broad generalisations about 'apartheid being bad' will not earn marks — specific evidence will.
