How to Pass the NBT: South Africa National Benchmark Test Guide

The NBT catches many South African matric students off guard โ not because it is harder than their matric exams, but because it tests different things in a different format. When we analysed NBT performance patterns, we found that students who prepare specifically for the NBT format significantly outperform those who rely solely on their matric preparation. This guide covers what the NBT actually tests, how it differs from the NSC, and what to do in the weeks before you sit it.
What is the NBT and who needs to write it?
The National Benchmark Test (NBT) is a standardised assessment used by South African universities to evaluate the academic readiness of prospective students. It is administered by the Centre for Educational Testing for Access and Placement (CETAP) at the University of Cape Town. Most major South African universities โ UCT, Wits, Stellenbosch, UP, UJ, UKZN, NWU, and others โ require NBT results for admission to at least some of their programmes.
There are three NBT tests: Academic Literacy (AL), Quantitative Literacy (QL), and Mathematics (MAT). All applicants write AL and QL. MAT is only required for programmes with a mathematics prerequisite โ engineering, science, commerce, and health science programmes at most universities. Check the specific requirements of the universities and programmes you are applying to, as requirements differ.
Academic Literacy: what it tests
The Academic Literacy test assesses the language and reading skills needed for university study โ skills that extend beyond what is tested in your matric English paper. It covers: vocabulary in academic contexts (words used in lectures, textbooks, and written assignments), understanding of longer and more complex texts (academic articles, editorials, reports), understanding of text structure and argument (identifying the main argument, supporting evidence, and conclusions), coherence and cohesion (how ideas connect across paragraphs), and interpreting visual information (graphs, tables, diagrams embedded in text).
The most effective preparation for Academic Literacy is reading academic or analytical texts regularly in the weeks before the test. South African sources: Daily Maverick opinion pieces, Mail and Guardian analysis articles, and academic journal abstracts available through university open-access repositories. Focus on texts that present an argument and support it with evidence โ this is the structure that dominates the AL test.
Quantitative Literacy: what it tests
Quantitative Literacy tests the ability to reason with numbers in real-world contexts โ similar to Mathematical Literacy but at a higher level of complexity and with less scaffolding. It covers: number sense and calculation (percentages, ratios, rates, proportions), patterns and relationships (identifying and continuing numerical and graphical patterns), data interpretation (reading and reasoning from tables, bar charts, line graphs, pie charts), spatial reasoning (maps, plans, scales, 2D and 3D shapes), and probability in everyday contexts.
Unlike the matric QL test, the NBT QL test is timed more strictly and requires faster processing. The questions are presented with minimal scaffolding โ you are not told which formula to apply or which operation to use. Practice with timed numerical reasoning questions (Dragonfly's Numerical Reasoning set is directly relevant) is the most effective preparation for this component.
NBT Mathematics: what it tests
The NBT Mathematics test covers mathematical knowledge at a level beyond the NSC curriculum. It tests: number sense (arithmetic, estimation, number properties), algebra (expressions, equations, inequalities, functions), geometry (Euclidean geometry, coordinate geometry, trigonometry), and data and probability. The questions are harder than NSC Paper 1 and Paper 2 โ they test whether you can apply mathematical reasoning to unfamiliar problems, not just execute practised procedures.
The best preparation for NBT Mathematics is thorough NSC Mathematics preparation plus exposure to additional problem-solving practice. If you are scoring 70% or above in NSC Mathematics practice, your foundation for the NBT MAT is solid. If you are below 60%, strengthen your NSC foundation first before targeting NBT-specific preparation.
NBT results and what they mean
NBT results are reported in three proficiency bands for each test: Proficient (no academic risk โ strong academic literacy, ready for university-level work), Intermediate (some academic risk โ may benefit from additional support, some universities provide bridging programmes), and Basic (high academic risk โ significant foundation gaps, may not be admitted to some programmes or may require foundation year).
NBT results are used differently by different universities. Some use them purely for placement (to identify students who need additional support). Others use them as part of the admission selection. UCT, for example, weights NBT results alongside NSC subject marks for competitive programme admissions. Check each university's specific NBT usage policy โ this information is published on their admissions websites.
Practical preparation timeline
Eight weeks before your NBT date: Write a diagnostic practice test for each component you are writing. Identify your weakest areas. Do not try to improve everything at once โ prioritise the areas where you can gain the most marks.
Six to four weeks before: Focused daily practice. For Academic Literacy: read one analytical article per day and summarise the argument in two sentences. For Quantitative Literacy: work through 20 timed numerical reasoning questions per day. For Mathematics: complete one set of 10 challenge-level algebra and geometry problems per day.
Two weeks before: Mixed practice tests under timed conditions. Simulate the actual test environment โ no interruptions, no calculator for AL and QL (calculators are not permitted in the NBT), strict time limits. Review every wrong answer in detail before moving to new practice material.
