Matric English Home Language Practice Test โ€” Grade 12 NSC

Free Matric English Home Language practice questions. Covers comprehension, grammar, language structures, vocabulary and literary techniques for Grade 12 NSC.

Matric English Home Language is tested across three papers and rewards students who read carefully and write precisely. This practice set covers the skills most heavily tested in Paper 1 (Language in Context) and Paper 3 (Writing): reading comprehension at literal, inferential, and critical levels; grammar and language structures; vocabulary in context; and language conventions. Literary analysis questions (poetry, novel, drama) are covered in the flashcard set.

The most important English exam technique: answer the question that is actually asked, not the question you wish was asked. Read each question twice โ€” once to understand what is being asked, and once after reading the passage to confirm your answer addresses that specific question.

Every answer to a comprehension question should reference the text โ€” either by direct quotation or by clear reference to what the passage says. Generic answers that do not engage with the text earn minimal marks.

Study tip: For grammar questions, if unsure, read the sentence aloud with each option. The grammatically correct option usually sounds natural and clear. Trust your ear, but verify with the rule.
