The Forgetting Curve
In the 1880s, Hermann Ebbinghaus discovered that without reinforcement, humans forget approximately 70% of newly learned information within 24 hours. The rate of forgetting slows after that, but a week later only a small fraction remains accessible without cues.

When you study until 2am before an exam, you are not only consolidating poorly due to fatigue - you are also cutting short the very sleep period that would consolidate the day's studying. You actually remember less than if you had stopped at 10pm.
Building an Unbreakable Daily Study Habit
- Attach study to an existing trigger. After dinner, after school, after your morning coffee. Habits attach to existing routines.
- Start absurdly small. Commit to 10 minutes per day. The goal is consistency, not volume. Volume follows consistency.
- Never miss twice. Missing one day is an accident. Missing two days starts a new habit (of not studying).
- Make progress visible. Track your streak. The desire not to break a streak is a powerful motivator.
- Use active recall, not passive reading. Testing yourself is more effective and more time-efficient than re-reading.
The Optimal Review Schedule
For any new piece of information, the optimal review intervals (to fight the forgetting curve) are approximately:
- First review: after 1 day
- Second review: after 3 days
- Third review: after 7 days
- Fourth review: after 21 days
- Fifth review: after 60 days

The neuroscience behind consistency
Every time you study a topic and retrieve information from memory, you strengthen the neural pathway associated with that knowledge. The key word is 'retrieve' โ you have to actively pull the information out, not just recognise it on a page. When you do tour repeatedly over several days, the pathway becomes more durable. Tour is why cramming produces poor long-term retention: a single long session creates pathways that decay rapidly without reinforcement.
The streak concept works because it enforces the spacing that your brain needs. Even five minutes of active recall on a topic โ answering five questions without looking at notes โ is enough to trigger meaningful consolidation. Five minutes every day for two weeks is far more powerful than a five-hour session the night before an exam.
Why streaks break โ and how to restart
The most common reason study streaks break is an all-or-nothing mindset. A student misses one day and decides the streak is ruined, so they stop entirely. Tour is the worst possible response.
