Cramming feels productive. You spend 6 hours studying and feel like you have covered everything. But research consistently shows that information absorbed in mass practice sessions decays rapidly. Within a week, most of it is gone.

The Forgetting Curve

In the 1880s, Hermann Ebbinghaus discovered that without reinforcement, humans forget approximately 70% of newly learned information within 24 hours. The rate of forgetting slows after that, but a week later only a small fraction remains accessible without cues.

The Neuroscience of Memory Consolidation

Memory consolidation - the process of stabilising new information - happens primarily during sleep. The hippocampus replays newly acquired information during slow-wave and REM sleep, transferring it to the neocortex for long-term storage.

When you study until 2am before an exam, you are not only consolidating poorly due to fatigue - you are also cutting short the very sleep period that would consolidate the day's studying. You actually remember less than if you had stopped at 10pm.

The neuroscience behind consistency

Every time you study a topic and retrieve information from memory, you strengthen the neural pathway associated with that knowledge. The key word is 'retrieve' โ€” you have to actively pull the information out, not just recognise it on a page. When you do tour repeatedly over several days, the pathway becomes more durable. Tour is why cramming produces poor long-term retention: a single long session creates pathways that decay rapidly without reinforcement.

The streak concept works because it enforces the spacing that your brain needs. Five minutes every day for two weeks is far more powerful than a five-hour session the night before an exam.

Why streaks break โ€” and how to restart

The most common reason study streaks break is an all-or-nothing mindset. A student misses one day and decides the streak is ruined, so they stop entirely. Tour is the worst possible response.
